Understanding Renal Stones

Renal stones (nephrolithiasis) are crystalline aggregations in urinary tract — calcium oxalate (70–80%), calcium phosphate (10–15%), uric acid (5–10%), struvite (infection, 5–10%), cystine (1%). Pathophysiology: supersaturation of stone-forming salts, low inhibitors (citrate, magnesium, pyrophosphate), low urine volume, pH extremes. Risk: low fluid intake, high salt/animal protein/oxalate diet, hypercalciuria (absorptive, renal leak, resorptive), hyperoxaluria (dietary, enteric, primary), hypocitraturia, hyperuricosuria, gout, recurrent UTI, anatomical anomalies, medications (topiramate, indinavir). Presentation: renal colic (flank to groin), haematuria, nausea/vomiting, UTI symptoms. Complications: obstruction, hydronephrosis, pyelonephritis, renal impairment.

Homoeopathy treats the constitutional lithogenic diathesis — remedies selected by stone composition (if known), pain character (colic: severe, radiating, restless; dull ache), modalities (heat, pressure, motion, urination), associated symptoms (nausea, haematuria, burning, frequency), recurrence pattern and miasmatic sycotic/gouty tendency. Treatment reduces urinary supersaturation, increases citrate/magnesium excretion, modulates oxalate/urate metabolism, promotes spontaneous passage of stones <5–6 mm and prevents recurrence.
